Redundancy Information

updated 23 August 2010

We need to make it clear that UNISON cannot accept the County Council's Redundancy proposals. We believe the redundancies are politically motivated and unnecessary.

Once someone is made redundant the post they undertook is gone forever. However the work will still be there and therefore more pressure is place on remaining staff.

Additionally in the present economic climate if members do take redundancy then there are very few, if any, alternative jobs to go to.

With the County Council writing out to 12,000 staff asking for interest in voluntary redundancy we thought we should make members aware of some of the pitfalls of going down that road.............

Before you make your mind up you need to be aware that should you accept VR you may lose any entitlement to Mortgage Protection you currently have on your mortgage. Most Building Society's and Banks will not pay Mortgage protection if you have taken Voluntary redundancy - you need to check this with your mortgage lender.

You may not be entitled to benefits for a period of time as you have taken VR again this is something that you should check out with Welfare Rights or the relevant Benefits Agency.
