Letter to members in NCC re strike action on 24th Feb
Questions and Answers re Strike
17th Feb 15.45
You will have already received a letter from the UNISON Regional Centre with the ballot result and now we can legally tell you that the first day of action will be next Thursday 24th February.
The 24th Feb is the day that Councillors meet to confirm budget plans. The cuts would lead to reduced services to the people of Nottinghamshire, and 1000 compulsory redundancies which the union fears would cause misery to families and hit local shops and businesses. UNISON has suggested £26m of budget adjustments which should mean no workers should face the sack.
The Nottinghamshire plans contrast with neighbouring Derbyshire County Council, which is working with UNISON to avoid compulsory redundancies. UNISON needs your support for this action.
You can help fellow members by:

COUNCIL MEMBERS TO BE BALLOTED ON STRIKE ACTION TO SAVE JOBS AND SERVICES
Ballot now underway 27th Jan 11
Press Release 27th Jan 11
UNISON members at Nottinghamshire County Council are to be balloted on possible strike action as part of the union campaign to prevent unprecedented job and service cuts.
In a consultation exercise earlier this year, UNISON members ‘voted’ by 2 to 1 to move to a formal ballot. Legal notification was served on the employer on Thursday 20 January. If members approve industrial action, then the union may call this to coincide with a public rally and demonstration it plans to hold in West Bridgford on Thursday 24 February 2011 – the date councillors meet at County Hall to set the Council Tax budget.
Martin Sleath, Nottinghamshire UNISON Joint Branch Secretary said:
“Tory-led Nottinghamshire County Council is making a political choice to close day care centres, sell of elderly people homes, and privatise services. It has £159 million in cash reserves, yet plans to spend £60million on redundancies rather than on maintaining services. UNISON members are sick of hearing ‘there is no alternative’ to these cuts, when the Government has told councils to use reserves to protect vital services.
“The scale of the cuts will hit all communities, and add further misery on families as 2,500 staff face the sack. We call on the council to halt the plans and talk to UNISON about proper alternatives to draconian and permanent cuts.”
